Sound shapes our world in powerful ways — often without us even realising it. From the thrill of live music to the subtle atmosphere of a film score, sound moves us, connects us, and brings experiences to life. But when sound becomes unwanted, it becomes noise — affecting how we feel, sleep, and concentrate.

About the Competition

The Institute of Acoustics has been running its annual Young Person's Competition (formerly the Secondary School Competition) since 2021, giving young people aged 13 to 25 the chance to explore the world of acoustics, sound, noise, and vibration — and discover the exciting career paths these fields can lead to.

Judges have been consistently impressed by the imagination, curiosity, and quality of work submitted. This year's competition is now open.

2026 Theme

Sound Unleashed

Ask big questions, think creatively, and share your ideas through a short video. No experience in acoustics is necessary — curiosity and creativity are what count.

What Could You Explore?

The theme is deliberately broad. Here are some starting points to spark your thinking:

How does sound move us emotionally — in music, film, or everyday life?
How can design reduce noise in cities, schools, or workplaces?
How does noise pollution affect wildlife and natural habitats?
What happens to sound in extreme environments — underwater, in space?
Could sound be used in medicine or technology in new ways?
How do acousticians make concerts and theatres sound incredible?
